That is a great question. The obvious answer is to save you money and inform you of the condition of all type vessels. How can that be you may ask? Well, again simply put: I use equipment and techniques to find things right or wrong with the boat or yacht before you buy it and thus give you the opportunity to decide if the vessel is worth it! The fees are much less than most repairs on a vessel, and the advantage is I try finding things that may be wrong that the average eye cannot. By using the Federal Regulations (CFR), the voluntary standards of the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) and the standards of the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) I don't try to pick apart the boat, I want to make sure that the vessel is safe to use for you the consumer and thus keep you afloat, physically and financially. My aim is to let you know what is good about a vessel and what is not, I do not try to condemn a boat or yacht, those decisions are up to you. I just report the facts.
A qualified Marine Surveyor can develop a realistic and dependable indication of the condition, value, and associated risks of a corporate or private yacht, small craft, tug, or any ocean going vessel, pleasure or commercial, that the owners, buyers, insurance underwriters, and financial institutions may rely upon. Modern day vessels which are constructed with high-tech materials can no longer be surveyed and inspected by the old "knuckle tapping" technique. The older wooden hulls need a professional Maritime Surveyor with extensive training and experience on wood vessel construction.
